Use it or Lose it We are not Destined to Wither Away with Age

Exercise & Resistance Training ARE the FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH!
Scientists used to believe we were DESTINED to become feeble,& lose muscle mass, height, energy & mental sharpness with age. Fortunately, this is NOT necessarily so!
A research study published by the Public Library of Science shows that loss of muscle & strength as we age is largely AVOIDABLE! Symptoms of aging are really symptoms of misuse!
So......... "It's too late for me" or "I'm too old" is no longer an excuse!
It is NOT inevitable that we will soften up & wither away as we age. It's never too late to add muscle. It IS true that a sedentary adult loses 5-7% of muscle each decade. However, the key to aging WELL is to MOVE! Use your body! We can counteract the effects of time with exercise and resistance training...using your own bodyweight or weights, med balls, tubing, whatever!
THE SCIENCE: The Public Library of Science study shows that, as our muscles age, the mitochondria within our muscle cells (responsible for converting food and oxygen into energy) begin to malfunction in the absence of physical activity. Without healthy mitochondria, our muscles wither away and fat cells move in! In their study, researchers biopsied muscle tissue of both "coach-potato" and active adults at ages 53-73. The sedentary adults' muscles contained few healthy mitochondria & the active adults' muscles contained as many functioning mitochondria as someone in their 20's!
The reality is we LOSE muscle ONLY IF WE DON'T USE THEM!
CONCLUSION: Muscle wasting is a result of muscle dis-use. It's not too late to get busy preserving our strength, energy and fitness!
